Gareth Ainsworth says it will be a "real honour" to lead the side out as club captain when the Blues kick off their npower League 2 campaign at home to Morecambe on Saturday (k.o. 3pm).

The 37-year-old was considered the ideal candidate for the captaincy by manager Gary Waddock, who has been impressed with the ex-QPR man's leadership credentials and knowledge of the game, as well as his popularity with the rest of the squad.

"I know there's thousands of people who would love to have that number 7 shirt and I will give everything I've got."

Now Ainsworth is determined to lead by example as the Blues prepare for the start of the new season, promising supporters that he will do everything he can to help the club bounce back to npower League 1 at the first attempt:

"To be officially given the armband was a very proud moment for me and to be club captain is a real honour, as is putting the shirt on every week," he said. "I know there's thousands of people who would love to have that number 7 shirt and I will give everything I've got.

"I want success for this club and we want to give the fans something to cheer about. We need the fans and we need everyone to turn up and get behind us - we're going to try to be entertaining and play good football, and to be the leader of that makes me very proud."

'Gaz' is sponsored by Mayor Broking (home), A&M Refurbishment (away) and Leslie Croxford (3rd kit) - click here to find out how you can sponsor a player for the new campaign.
