MATT WAITING FOR EURO CHANCE

Posted on: Mon 19 Jul 2010
Blues starlet Matt Phillips will be hoping to make his European Championship Finals bow when England U19s face Holland on Wednesday.

The Young Lions are in a strong position in Group A after kicking off the tournament with a thrilling 3-2 win over Austria on Sunday evening.

A brace from West Ham striker Frank Nouble gave England a 2-0 half-time lead before a free-kick from Bayern Munich youngster David Alaba reduced the deficit at the start of the second period.

Arsenal's Tom Cruise restored the two-goal cushion minutes later when he fired home from close range. Gernot Trauner's 73rd minute goal gave the Austrians hope but England held on for the victory.

Phillips is England's only player currently at a club lower than npower Championship level, with 15 of the 18-man squad on the books of Premier League sides.

The 19-year-old winger was an unused substitute in England's victory over Austria, but will be aiming to get some match action as the Young Lions look to go one step further than last year's final appearance and win the European U19 Championships.
