GAZ: TEAM SPIRIT PULLED US THROUGH

Posted on: Wed 31 Mar 2010

Gareth Ainsworth was quick to pay tribute to his team-mates for their never-say-attitude after his last-minute goal earned a 1-1 draw for the Blues at Colchester on Saturday.

The 36-year-old bundled home Matt Phillips' cross to become an instant hero amongst Wycombe supporters for scoring against their biggest rivals, but the modest midfielder passed the plaudits on to the rest of the squad:

"It was a fantastic effort by the boys," he buzzed. "It shows you a lot about this team to come here in a derby game against a side who are pushing for the play-offs and to get a point.

"We had our plan, we stuck to it and it paid off, so fair play to Gary (Waddock) and to the 18 lads who travelled - they were fantastic and we got our just desserts.

"The subs who came on were excellent and even those who didn't come on were right behind us. People like Scott Shearer and Lewis Montrose were cheering with us in the dressing room and they're a part of this as well. There's a great team spirit going around," he added.

Ainsworth's equaliser made headlines around the country for its controversial nature, with the ball striking his arm en route to goal, and the former QPR man couldn't deny that Colchester had a right to feel aggrieved:

"I've thrown myself at it and it skimmed my head but then it has hit my hand," he confessed. "I didn't mean it and when you throw yourself at it, it can hit anything. I'm pleased the ref didn't give it, and in all honesty I thought we deserved it anyway.

"Anyone who says I cheated can look at when I could have gone down for a penalty, but I wouldn't dive. It's one of those things - I'm just glad for the boys that we got a point, which is the most important thing."

And Ainsworth followed Gary Waddock's lead in praising the travelling Blue Army for their terrific support throughout the game:

"The fans were fantastic. They never stopped singing, and they outsung Colchester for the whole game, so well done to the Wycombe fans."

Coming soon: Ainsworth looks ahead to the visit of Huddersfield on Saturday, as the Blues attempt to avenge the 6-0 defeat at the hand of the Terriers earlier this season.
