GARY: "IT'S NOT OVER"

Posted on: Sun 21 Mar 2010

Blues boss Gary Waddock refused to accept that his side are destined for the drop after seeing Exeter City claim an unlikely point in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Adams Park.

Gareth Ainsworth and Stuart Beavon looked to have set the home side on their way to a crucial victory over their rivals in the battle for survival, but the Grecians hit back to leave Wanderers seven points adrift of safety.

However, Waddock responded defiantly to claims that Wanderers have left themselves too much to do in their mission to prevent a return to League Two:

"It's not over - not by a long way," he declared. "Until it's mathematically sorted, we'll keep going. We were in a wonderful position today to get three points but it didn't happen; there are games left that we need to win and we still have to play teams that are in and around us.

"We'll definitely be fighting until the bitter end, but it is a bitter pill to swallow tonight after getting ourselves in front."

Liam Sercombe's stunning strike started the visitors' fightback and sparked a nervous reaction from the home side, who allowed Richard Logan to run through unchallenged to level the scores with just a minute remaining - something that Waddock was unable to comprehend:

"I can't explain it - we got ourselves in a great position to get three points over a side which is in and around us and then wasted that opportunity. The first goal was a great strike but we've conceded another late goal which we should have dealt with better.

"There are a lot of experienced professionals in the dressing room and we should be able to see the game out. We were solid, we got ourselves in front but the game shouldn't have taken that course.

"The commitment and effort was there for everyone to see - they worked so hard to get us into that position but we didn't do that last bit. Obviously I wasn't happy about that and it's very difficult to explain."
