TOM CAN'T WAIT FOR SAINTS

Posted on: Wed 24 Feb 2010

On-loan goalkeeper Tom Heaton says he cannot wait to return to the fray against Southampton tonight, following the Chairboys' stunning home victory against Millwall three days ago.

The young Manchester United stopper built on his solid debut in last week's draw at Brentford by producing a dazzling man-of-the-match performance - including a vital penalty save - in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Lions, and admits that after a result like this the next fixture - and the chance to take another big scalp at Adams Park - cannot come soon enough.

"For me it can't come quick enough; I think we'll be ready for Tuesday night and I don't think Southampton will enjoy coming here on the back of our two results and how we've played football," he told wwfc.com.

"I think it'll be a tough game for them and we're going to look for nothing less than the three points and keep building."

The stalwart defensive work of Wanderers' back five played a big part in them securing maximum points against Kenny Jackett's side; something which was particularly apparent following the sending off of Gareth Ainsworth with 13 minutes of normal time remaining.

Yet Heaton believes that praise for the clean sheet should be extended to the entire Blues line-up, with the former England U21 international confessing his delight at the effort put in by all ten of his outfield colleagues.

He said: "They [Millwall] had a few chances but the whole team defended excellently from front to back; I think you can see the closing down, the getting up to the ball, the heading and the clearing.

"Even when people were tired and we're down to ten men they're still doing it and it's just fantastic to see. They're the sort of clean sheets that you know you can be proud of."

Keeping a second consecutive clean sheet this evening will be tough for the Chairboys against a Southampton side that have only failed to score once in their last 33 games in all competitions.

Heaton, though, has faith that if Wanderers can replicate the defensive resilience they have shown in the past two matches, they will have a good chance of getting a positive result against the Saints and consequently edge themselves closer to survival.

"If we carry on defending like that, it's going to give us a foundation for an excellent run," he said.

"We've got four points from a possible six from the last couple of games which is tremendous, and hopefully we can build on that tonight, get another three points and then get to safety."
