AINSWORTH'S UP FOR THE FIGHT

Posted on: Thu 04 Feb 2010
Deadline day signing Gareth Ainsworth says he will draw upon all of his fighting spirit and do everything in his power to help keep the Chairboys in League One this season.

Having now made his move to Adams Park permanent following a short loan spell earlier in the campaign, the midfielder - renowned for his tenacity and enthusiasm - insists that the Blues can beat the drop and that he himself will battle relentlessly to try and make this a reality.

"I know it's not a perfect situation [being in the bottom four] but it's a situation which I won't ever turn my back on," he told Chairboys Player.

"People do say sometimes the lack of skill or the lack of tricks on the pitch from me is made up tenfold in the passion and the heart that I show, and that goes for Wycombe too.

"I'll get in this, I'll give it a right fight and believe me in that last game of the season, I'll give everything I possibly can to help Wycombe survive and hopefully we will have done that."

Despite speculation that the 36-year-old would retire after leaving Queens Park Rangers, the man from Blackburn has far from lost his appetite for playing and admits he is delighted that Wanderers have given him the chance to extend his on-field career with an 18 month contract.

"I've kept myself fit all through my career and really prided myself on being a fit lad; to be able to play another 18 months is something I really wanted to do," he said.

"People were saying 'he's going to hang his boots up, get into coaching or managing' - nothing of the sort - I want to be out there and I'm still learning even now; we've got a great staff here with Gary [Waddock] and Martin [Kuhl], and I think they can really achieve things."

The Blues have certainly had success with Ainsworth in the line-up, having won both of the games that he started whilst on-loan in November.

Saturday's 3-2 win at Bristol Rovers was undoubtedly a huge result for the Chairboys, but the experienced winger knows just how important it is that Wanderers don't stop there.

He said: "Winning breeds winning; we've got to be winning in training, winning reserve games, winning all through the week and then Saturday comes and we want to be winning again.

"We want to get buzzing, get the roll going and that will help us survive."
