I CAN ONLY GET BETTER - PAYNE

Posted on: Mon 25 Jan 2010
Josh Payne secured a share of the spoils with a stunning debut strike at Southend on Saturday, but insisted his performances "can only get better".

Payne, who joined on loan from Premier League side West Ham United on Friday, was in modest mood after he fired the Blues to a point at Roots Hall.

The 19-year-old was disappointed with his own display, claiming his 25-yard drive was the only thing that saved his showing in the League One encounter in Essex.

"That was one of my bad games and I needed the goal," he said. "I'll take the goal, but everything else was slack from me and I've got to get used to it.

"You are only as good as your last game, so I can only get better!

"The boys and I needed something positive from the game. The goal got us back on our feet and following that we looked like we were going to win it."

Payne isn't a stranger to a debut goal, having scored in his first game for Cheltenham Town last season.

He joked: "I never normally score! However, when I was on loan at Cheltenham I also scored a debut goal - it must be one of those things. I'm not really a goalscorer but I'll take that one.

"It was nice to get the boys back in the match in my first game for the club."

Coming up on wwfc.com: extended highlights of Saturday's entertaining 1-1 draw with Southend and more from Josh Payne.
