WADDOCK: WE NEED VICTORIES

Posted on: Sun 17 Jan 2010
Gary Waddock praised his side for their display in the 2-1 defeat to promotion chasers Charlton Athletic, but stated that only victories will be good enough to see the Blues steer themselves away from the drop zone.

Nicky Bailey's 76th minute strike proved to be the difference at Adams Park after Jon-Paul Pittman's ninth goal of the season had cancelled out Jonjo Shelvey's opener.

The Blues boss said: "I feel for the players. They have worked extremely hard out there without picking up anything.

"I can't fault the players for their commitment and the way they played.

"The commitment they have shown, the work rate, the desire and everything else to get us out of the situation we are in has been shown again.

"Our team have hit some form in terms of our performances but now we need to win games.

"They have set the level for play and work rate and they have to continue that. There is no point feeling sorry for ourselves."

The Chairboys' performance warranted a share of the spoils from the League One clash at HP12 and Waddock felt the Wanderers were "unlucky", even if he did vent his frustration at the defending for both of the Addicks' goals.

He said: "We were unlucky but I would rather be a lucky manager. At the moment I would rather be poor in the next three games and get nine points.

"It is about results and we are not getting them at the moment.

"It's a familiar story really because the goals we are conceding are poor really and that is why we are where we are. When chances came for Charlton, they took them and that is the difference."

"Matty Phillips had a great strike with fantastic technique and they get a block in and it goes to one of their players. At the moment we try to clear things and it falls straight to one of their players and ends up in the back of the net.

"But you don't get the rub of green when you are at the bottom and it's up to the players to keep their heads held high.

"I would like to think that if we continue performing like that then we will win games.
