WADDOCK: "WE ARE GETTING THERE"
Posted on: Thu 26 Nov 2009
Gary Waddock believes the Blues are heading in the right direction, after seeing his side collect their second victory in the space of just four days on Tuesday evening.
Matt Harrold's 48th minute penalty was the difference between Wycombe and Brentford at Adams Park and the Chairboys chief was delighted to see the Wanderers follow up Saturday's 2-0 win at Millwall with another maximum haul.
Waddock said: "We showed a little bit of everything - we moved the ball around nicely when we had to. To go and win away at Millwall, you then have to make it count by winning your next home game and the victory actually makes Saturday's result even better.
"You saw the commitment from the players and I think it was summed up at the end. They threw themselves into everything to block efforts at goal, even right at the end in the 95th minute.
"We are getting there. It's about building confidence and believing in ourselves. We stood up to the challenge of a strong Brentford side, so confidence will come back.
"I obviously wasn't happy with the Huddersfield performance, so one or two things were said, but look at how they have responded. Now the players have set a standard of commitment and determination that they must maintain and when that isn't met they will here from Martin and I.
"We are very attack minded Martin and I, but you have to try and keep sheets to give yourselves a chance in games. There were some high scoring games even prior to the Huddersfield fixture and credit to the players they have addressed that."
The 47-year-old was thrilled with the team performance but singled out John Mousinho for special praise.
He said: "I like talking about the group and they all did it, but he was excellent. He puts his foot in and scraps but he showed another side of his game, because when it was there to be passed he passed it."
Waddock also revealed that Matt Harrold will remain on penalty duty, despite seeing his second spot-kick saved by Wojciech Szczesny.
He said: "You have to be a confident and brave person to step up. He put his first way extremely comfortably but he missed his second. He'll take the next one, no problem."
The Blues are not in action on Saturday due to their FA Cup first round exit at the hands of Brighton, but Waddock feels a free weekend could prove to be beneficial ahead of the trip to St Mary's on Tuesday.
The Chairboys chief commented: "We would love to be in the FA Cup on Saturday but we're not. It's nice that we can take a look at it over the weekend and we go into the Southampton game full of confidence."
Waddock also confirmed post-match that Chris Westwood and Matt Bloomfield missed the clash with hamstring problems, which they picked up in training on Monday.
