Gary Waddock believes his side's performance in Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Walsall was by far the best since his arrival as Blues boss.
A stunning Scott Davies double had put the Wanderers 2-0 up and in control of proceedings at Adams Park, but second half strikes from Steve Jones, Mark Hughes and Alex Nicholls completed a remarkable comeback for Chris Hutchings' Saddlers.
Waddock said: "We had a number of opportunities, put a lot of crosses into the box and on another given day the scoreline would have been different. The scoreline suggests Walsall won the game and they did but for long periods we played well.
"It was the best performance I've seen from the group since I took over. For the first hour I thought we looked an extremely good side. That wasn't a performance from a team sitting bottom of the table, well the first hour wasn't."
Waddock's men were cruising at 2-0 but the Blues boss revealed post-match that he always felt his side needed a third goal to kill off a resilient Walsall side.
"Everyone said in the dressing room at half-time that it was important to get the next goal and the amount of opportunities we created we should have won the game.
"If Scotty's (Davies) effort had gone in rather than being cleared off the line that would have changed the course of the game, but credit to Walsall they kept going and got their reward in the end.
"I was pleased for the hour, but for whatever reason we lost our way and it's a shame because a lot of those players put in a lot of hard work and effort and played close to how we want them to play, apart from the end product."
Despite the loss the Chairboys chief believes similar performances will see his side claim victories, although he admits the Blues must be more "ruthless" at both ends of the pitch.
Waddock said: "If we continue to play like that we will win football matches. We must take the positives from it. We played well apart from the result. We have to move on and be positive.
"But we know we have to be more clinical and ruthless in front of goal as well as more dogged as a group at the other end. We need to be ruthless and professional in both boxes."
