Richard Dobson has described this weekend as a "rollercoaster" after taking temporary charge of the Wanderers following the departures of manager Peter Taylor and assistant boss Junior Lewis.
The head of youth development came into work on Friday morning preparing for a routine training session with the Under-18s but was soon planning for the first team's trip to Gillingham after being informed of the news.
"It's been one hell of a rollercoaster", he told the press after the clash with the Gills. "It's hard because you've got to focus on the job in hand but at the same time you've got an air of disappointment because two people you've got a lot of respect for have gone.
"It came out of the blue and you've just got to get on with it. You either sink or swim and I gave it my best shot; hopefully one day down the line I'll get another shot but in terms of my development it was good for me," he added.
The 33-year-old will return to his duties with the youth department this week as the club look to appoint a new manager in time for the visit of Colchester United next weekend, and Dobson hopes the incoming boss will be able to turn around the Wanderers' fortunes:
"Peter is a hard act to follow with his background and what he's achieved in the game. You can't go and pick another man with his experience but another man is going to come in with new ideas and maybe he'll freshen the place up.
"Someone needs to come in and make their mark. I don't know who it is coming in or what type of person they are but they need to do things their way and try and change the mentality of the players a little bit. It's quite clear the players are lacking confidence at the moment but they need to try and play with a bit more freedom."
