CLUBS OFFER FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Posted on: Wed 18 Mar 2009

This weekend will see Football League clubs give their support to the 'Professional Football Against Hunger' campaign.

The campaign, which will encompass hundreds of clubs and millions of supporters across European football, is intended to raise awareness of the plight of the 963 million people who suffer from hunger and malnutrition and are without adequate access to food.

The 'Professional Football against Hunger' campaign was launched in October by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), of which The Football League is an associate member.

The EPFL is made up of 29 member and associated members leagues and comprises more than 900 professional football clubs across Europe.

Funds raised during the football weekend will help to finance anti-hunger micro-projects around the world, that have been designed to provide immediate and lasting solutions to poor families and communities by enabling them to produce their own food.

The micro projects, which are funded to a maximum of £7,000 each, are used to finance tangible resources such as fishing equipment, seeds and agricultural implements. They vary enormously, from helping families raise pigs in Venezuela, to creating school gardens in Cape Verde and providing school lunches in Uganda.

As well as matches in The Football League, The 'Professional Football Against Hunger' weekend will also include major games in the Premier League, Italian Lega Calcio and Pro Lega, German Bundesliga, , Spanish La Liga, Portuguese League, Dutch Eredivisie, Scottish Premier League, Bulgarian League and Welsh Premier League.
