LEWWIS - SECOND GOAL WAS KEY

Posted on: Sat 03 Jan 2009
Wycombe youngster Lewwis Spence has told wwfc.com his side saved themselves by bagging a second goal, after a 2-1 victory over Bury at Adams Park.

Angelo Balanta's second half strike enabled the Wanderers to edge ahead of the Shakers, even if Mike Williamson did deflect home a late own goal in the visitors' favour.

And the former Crystal Palace man says he was pleased to see the Blues give themselves a two-goal cushion which ultimately proved decisive:

"In football you're always going to put up with the unexpected and we had done ourselves a favour by getting the second," he said.

"The gaffer told us at half-time that he really wanted us to go and get another, and thanks to Angelo we did."

The victory completed a festive period which has seen the Wanderers collect eight points from four games over Christmas and the New Year, and Spence was pleased to begin 2009 with three points against a fellow promotion candidate:

"It was a great result for us because we've had a couple of draws so to pick up three points was pleasing.

"We've got a difficult period coming up with a few games away from home and you have to pick up as many points as possible," he added.

Saturday's fixture saw the 21-year-old revert to a wider role than usual in a 4-4-2 formation and as well as providing an assist for Matt Harrold's opener, Spence produced a fine performance for the whole 90 minutes:

"It's not easy to switch from playing in the centre to out on the left and I don't think people realise how big a change it is.

"I've been working hard on my game, trying to take players on more often, and I tried that when I could today. It was nice to get an assist; it's always good to set up goals but that's my job."
