WILLO: 'WE BUILD FROM THE BACK'
Despite conceding three goals at Aldershot on Saturday afternoon, Wycombe Wanderers defence still remains one of the tightest in the country.
Wanderers' 11 'goals against' is the best defensive record in League Two and only the big Premier League trio of Chelsea (6), Liverpool (9) and Manchester United (10) have bettered it in the whole of English football.
The weekend loss at the EEB Stadium was also only the second time since mid-April that the Blues have let in more than one goal in a league game, the other being the 4-2 home victory over Port Vale in late November.
Central defender Mike Williamson believes that the main reason that goalkeeper Scott Shearer has rarely had to pick the ball out of his own net this season, is the fact that Wycombe's back five have been extremely settled right from the off.
"I think for a while now we've had one of the best defensive records about," he said.
"The fact we have quite a consistent line-up who are used to playing together helps and that is pretty crucial to staying tight at the back."
Shearer has started all 19 league games so far this year and the defence ahead of him has scarcely changed either.
Williamson, Craig Woodman, David McCracken and Leon Johnson played 10 of the first 11 games together as a unit, after Leon Crooks started the season opener in McCracken's absence.
This line-up kept six clean sheets and conceded a measly four goals before Johnson picked up a shoulder injury in the first half against Darlington.
Fortunately for the Blues, Johnson's injury coincided with the return to fitness of summer signing Lewis Hunt, who slotted straight in at right back, alongside the other three regulars.
This new combination has now played seven of the last eight games and has been solid, keeping five clean sheets, including a notable one against free-scoring Bradford City.
With Williamson missing the rescheduled Macclesfield game due to illness, Johnson returned to keep the number of defenders that have started for Wycombe in the league to just six: a rarity in any league.
Williamson knows that keeping this defensive continuity will be difficult to continue, but he is confident that the Blues have good cover available, should they need it.
"At some stage suspensions and injuries will kick in and then we have to look to the squad, but we have got some talented players at the back and strength in depth.
"Leon (Johnson) got player of the year last season (and he is currently on the bench) which proves what a good squad we have."
In total, Wanderers have amassed 11 clean sheets in their 19 league games to this point, a figure that again can only be matched by Chelsea.
However captain McCracken would be the first to admit that Wycombe's defensive success is not only down to the work of the back four.
He said: "It starts with the strikers; the more they cut out then the easier it gets for us at the back.
"Obviously the defence does get the plaudits sometimes, but as a team we are doing extremely well and I am just hoping that can continue."
