Wanderers transfer target Simon Church underlined his credentials with another excellent finish in the Under-21 European Championship play-off clash with England on Tuesday evening.

The Reading striker, who spent a month on loan at Adams Park earlier this season, hit the headlines with two goals in the first leg on Friday night before handing the Welsh side a 2-1 lead in the second leg under the watchful gaze of Blues boss Peter Taylor.

Taylor has already expressed his desire to bring the 19-year-old back to the club in the near future and would have been impressed as the former Wycombe academy product had a hand in Aaron Ramsey's equaliser before collecting a through-ball in the area and converting smartly past Manchester City keeper Joe Hart.

However, Church's efforts were in vain as England - formerly coached by Taylor - clinched a 2-2 draw and a 5-4 aggregate victory to send them into the European Championships.

The youngster told BBC Sport: "I thought the lads put in a great performance but at the end of the day, we didn't get through and we are very disappointed.

"We came into the game and said we didn't want to be unlucky this time. We hate that word to be honest and unfortunately it didn't work out again for us. I was happy with the goal, and Rambo [Ramsey] scored an absolute beaut as well.

"It shows the quality in the team creating chances against top level teams."
