Peter Taylor's search for a striker has concluded with the signing of 24-year-old Matt Harrold from Southend United on a two-year deal, wwfc.com can exclusively reveal.
The 6'1" forward joins the Wanderers for a five-figure sum from the League One club just hours ahead of the transfer deadline, and Taylor says he's thrilled to have completed the deal to bring Harrold to Adams Park:
"I've seen Matt play a lot of times for Southend and I really like him," he said. "He's got a lot of quality and he's got all the things you want from a big striker so I'm really pleased to have signed him."
Harrold began his career as a youngster at Roots Hall before dropping into non-league with Grays Athletic, where his goalscoring exploits earned him a move to League One side Brentford in 2003.
The striker enjoyed spells on loan with Dagenham and Redbridge and Grimsby Town before signing for Yeovil Town in 2005, scoring ten times before stepping up to the Championship with Southend United a year later.
However, Harrold has found first team opportunities hard to come by with the Essex club and was placed on the transfer list in the summer, and Taylor says he's been tracking the forward for some time:
"It's been a frustrating time for Matt at the end of last season and the beginning of this one because he hasn't been playing much," he said. "But I've kept an eye on him and I'd like to thank the board for allowing me to get what I wanted."
Harrold becomes the second striker to join the club in the space of four days following the loan signing of Reading youngster Simon Church on a one-month deal on Friday, replacing John Sutton and Leon Knight who left the club a fortnight ago.
