Blues boss Peter Taylor has called for Wycombe fans to show their support for goalkeeper Scott Shearer after hearing a small number of negative comments about the Scotsman's recent performances.
The 27-year-old is enjoying a new lease of life at Adams Park after missing most of last season with a serious ankle injury and has kept three clean sheets in his seven league starts for the club after joining in July 2007, leaving Taylor bemused by the remarks from a minority of Wanderers followers:
"I have to say I'm disappointed with some people's reaction to Scott," he told wwfc.com after 'Shears' helped his side to a 1-0 win over Lincoln City. "Since I've been at the club I've given everyone a chance and it was always going to be between him and Jamie for the goalkeeping position, but I gave him the nod and I've heard a few comments which are disappointing.
"Scott made two marvellous saves at Chester last week which helped us win the game and although he might have made one small mistake today, I thought he did very well. He needs to perform well because Jamie Young is also an excellent keeper, but I think some fans need to be a bit more realistic - he only played four times last season before suffering a serious injury and it takes time."
The former Coventry and Bristol Rovers man proved his ability in the club's pre-season friendlies, saving a penalty at Forest Green as well as making a string of fine stops in the 2-1 win at Stevenage Borough, and Taylor added that criticising any players can have a detrimental effect on the squad:
"There were a few comments from certain supporters which were harsh, to be honest with you. Before a big game I wouldn't want to be hearing things like that because it would affect my thoughts and it's unhelpful. I'm sure it's only a minority but it's not the sort of thing you want to hear."
The next match at Adams Park is against Brentford on Saturday 13th September - call 01494 441118 to book your tickets.
