GAFFER HAPPY WITH PRE-SEASON
By Ben Campbell
Despite going down to a 2-1 defeat against Southend United at Adams Park on Saturday, Peter Taylor told wwfc.com that he is happy with what he has seen in the Blues' pre-season.
He said: "I'm not over the moon with the results but we've improved from the strength of that. I think it's been a very good month and I'm quite happy with how we've gone."
The 55-year-old also told press after the game that the season opener with Morecambe this coming Saturday can't come quick enough:
"This week's perfect. It'll be a serious week, we'll do four days of training and I'm really looking forward to the game."
Although the Blues boss was upbeat ahead of the start of the League Two campaign he did concede that his side must perform better than they did in the first half against the Shrimpers.
The ex-England boss said: "First half we were unprofessional from before kick-off. On the pitch we started poorly and that led to their opening goal. Again it's a friendly and if it means we get a clean sheet against Morecambe and learn from our mistakes, then I'll be delighted with that."
Just as Adam Barrett did on two minutes, veteran striker Paul Furlong scored from a free header past Jamie Young just before the break, something that left Taylor disappointed with nature of the visitors goals.
He said: "If Paul Furlong and Adam Barrett get up and smash the ball in then I can live with that, but their markers hardly jumped. Our positioning was all wrong."
The Wanderers boss made several changes at half-time and it seemed to pay dividends as the tide started to swing towards Wycombe. Not only did the 'gaffer' pick out three of his new signings to heap praise on but he also revealed that he was delighted with the way the team went about their task in the second half.
He said: "We had a bit more pace in the team in the second half and we did improve after the break. There are still things we can improve on but there were some things I really liked.
"Ashton (Nathan) showed some good things, Gavin Grant, who has been poor for two weeks here, is now a confident young player and that's terrific."
But Taylor saved the plaudits for goalscorer Magno Silva Vieira:
"That's two in two for him now; I was just about to take him off when he scored. He didn't celebrate well! Magno has done well and apart from Flackwell Heath he's not played with a great deal of confidence. However, he's carried on working hard and he's got his reward with a couple of goals."
Tomorrow on wwfc.com will be the best pictures from the game as well as injury update on a number of the Blues' first team stars.
