BLUES FALL TO SHRIMPERS

Although the Blues produced a vastly improved second half performance, Peter Taylor's men fell to a 2-1 defeat to League One side Southend United at Adams Park.
Wanderers started slowly and found themselves behind on two minutes when Adam Barrett headed past Jamie Young, Paul Furlong then doubled the Shrimpers' lead five minutes before the break in what Peter Taylor described as an "unprofessional" first half from his side.
Wycombe's Brazilian striker Magno Silva Vieira gave the Blues crowd hope just after the hour mark after guiding the ball home, but despite dominating the last 30 minutes the Chairboys couldn't find the equaliser in the club's one and only pre-season friendly at Adams Park.
Wanderers World interview with goalscorer Magno Silva Vieira.
Steve Tilson's Southend started very brightly and especially in the early stages they showed why they are going to be surely challenging - as they did last season - at the right end of the League One table.
Adam Barrett was able to wriggle free of his marker to head the visitors in front on two minutes from a corner - not a good start to Peter Taylor's campaign at Adams Park.
Damian Scannell and Lee Barnard threatened to make it worse in the early stages and it was only a fantastic tackle from Craig Woodman that denied the ex-Spurs striker Barnard a shot on goal from 20 yards on seven minutes.
For the Blues, Magno was looking the most likely to create something but it was the unlikely form of Will Antwi who should have done better on 11 minutes. But after stealing round the back post the centre-back fired over from Tommy Doherty's corner.
Jamie Young was called in action just after the 20-minute mark but the ex-Reading keeper dealt well with ex-Charlton man James Walker's 25-yard effort.
Wanderers' own left-sided player, Lewwis Spence, was the next to try and get the Blues level but after creating space for himself his fiercely struck shot was deflected wide of Steve Mildenhall's goal from 25 yards.
Aussie keeper Jamie Young was once again up to the challenge on 38 minutes when he pushed away another well hit James Walker strike.
However, two minutes later Young was picking the ball out of the net for the second time after 39-year-old Furlong rose well to head the Shrimpers 2-0 up five minutes before the break.
It was a much changed Wycombe team that entered the fray for the second half and within five minutes Magno nearly halved the deficit, after jinking past a couple of defenders the Brazilian was crowded out and the chance was gone, but good signs were in place.
Despite looking the most likely to score next the Blues came ever so close to being 3-0 down as Scott Shearer could only watch Nicky Bailey's shot whistle past his post from the edge of the area.
Spence racked up another chance on 55 minutes when firstly he controlled well before trying his luck from the corner of the 18-yard box. Mildenhall was up to the latest Lewwis Spence challenge, but the Blues were getting closer.
And it was the other Blues wideman Gavin Grant who helped get the Wanderers back in the game, the ex-Stevenage man went past Lewis Emmanuel with ease before sending his cross to the back post, where Magno Silva Vieira was waiting to poke the ball home to make it 2-1.
Despite grabbing his first goal at Adams Park Magno was replaced by Nathan Ashton a minute later.
And the substitute went close to drawing the Chairboys level with 20 minutes left but his delicate 20-yard chip went narrowly over the bar after picking the ball up 40 yards from goal. I'm sure the ex-Fulham man will excite the watching Adams Park crowd this season and he proved in his performance why Peter Taylor made him his seventh signing after playing an important role in many of the Blues' remaining attacks.
Peter Taylor's men surged forward in search of the equalising goal but it wasn't until five minutes from time that the Blues came the closest to making it 2-2. Hard-working youngster Robbie Rice pounced on a loose ball but he couldn't quite direct his shot on target after steadying himself.
So despite a defeat on his Adams Park debut Peter Taylor will be able to take plenty of positives from a vastly improved second half performance. Morecambe here we come!
Tomorrow on wwfc.com will be the thoughts of Peter Taylor and on Monday we will bring you the best snaps from the Southend game.
