Wanderers midfielder Matty Bloomfield was delighted to hear the news that the Blues have been paired with Birmingham City in the first round of the Carling Cup when he spoke exclusively to wwfc.com.

'Blooms' said: "It'll be a great test for us, they've got top quality internationals playing in their side and a lot of them could still play in the Premiership.

"Speaking from experience, when you play against a top side you raise your game and the lads will certainly be looking forward to this one."

The 24-year-old will unfortunately miss the plum tie due to a knee injury, but the midfield dynamo knows what it takes to get past the top teams after playing a big part in the club's memorable Carling Cup run in 2006/07.

He said: "There aren't many of the lads left from the run a couple of years ago but the new group will really be relishing a challenge like this.

"We've got nothing to lose and these cup games are a nice distraction from the bread and butter of the league."

Birmingham were relegated on the final day of the Premiership season last year and despite the huge talent that lays within the other Blues squad, 'Blooms' is hoping that football will provide another upset when the teams meet on the week commencing August 11th.

He said: "We've proved in the past that we can mix it with the big teams in cup games and it comes down to 90 minutes and 11 against 11.

"Granted it will be a tough game for us as they will want to progress but I don't see any reason why we can't go through."
