Wanderers have been drawn at home to Championship side Birmingham City in the first round of this season's Carling Cup, wwfc.com can exclusively reveal.

Wanderers boss Peter Taylor said: "It's a magnificent draw for us. I'm delighted we're at home, they will bring good support and they are a quality team. It will be a massive test."

And for the first time in the competition's history, clubs will be able to name seven substitutes in the Carling Cup this season after a rule change by the Football League.

The two teams last met in the second round of the same competition in the 2000/01 campaign, when City took a three-goal lead at Adams Park before an incredible comeback from the Blues saw the game level at 3-3 until current England striker Andy Johnson bagged a last-minute winner.

Birmingham went on to seal the victory in the second leg courtesy of a 1-0 win at St Andrews, with Peter Ndlovu scoring the only goal.

Alex McLeish's side were relegated from the Premiership on the final day of last season alongside Reading, who travel to Dagenham and Redbridge, and Derby County, who host Lincoln City.

The match will take place in the week commencing Monday 11th August.
