Scott McGleish surpassed the Blues' record for the highest number of league goals in a season with his terrific brace against MK Dons on Saturday, and told wwfc.com that the second of the two was the greatest goal he's ever scored.
Just moments after an offside Aaron Wilbraham had levelled the scores at stadium:mk, the 34-year-old pounced on a loose ball inside the Dons half to volley the ball over stranded keeper Willy Gueret for his 25th goal of an incredible campaign, and the striker was buzzing after his effort:
"That's probably the best of my career," he proudly declared. "I scored a half-volley for Colchester against Cambridge but I think this one tops that now and it's nice to break the club record.
"Their keeper wasn't too happy about the goal because I don't think he expected the shot, and the whole stadium fell silent apart from that corner of away fans - I saw my dad jumping up and down!"
His first-half header took him past the previous record held by Sean Devine, who hit 23 times in the 1999/2000 season, and the striker is understandably proud of his achievement:
"It's nice to have that honour," he said. "Records are there to be broken and I'm glad to have done so, but if someone comes along and breaks it then at least it shows that the club is progressing."
However, the former Barnet man's brace wasn't enough to clinch all three points in a game which was tarnished by two controversial Dons goals, and McGleish admits that it will now be a tough ask to break into the top three:
"It was a mixed day for me, but that's part and parcel of the game," he said. "It will be hard to make third place now and we have to pick ourselves up to make sure we at least make the top seven.
And the veteran forward told us that he's showing no signs of fatigue after a season in which he has played in every league fixture for Paul Lambert's side, and that he's as eager as ever to add to his goal tally:
"There's four games to go and I'll do my best to make it to 30 goals," he said. "There's miles left in these legs, even beyond next year, and I just want to keep on scoring."
