GAFFER HAILS BATTLING DISPLAY

Posted on: Sun 16 Mar 2008

Paul Lambert was happy with the way his troops battled to hold on to all three points after going down to ten men in the Wanderers' 2-1 win over Wrexham on Tuesday night.

He said: "I'm over the moon. To get the six points from the two home games is great and it was a massive three points.

"We were so far ahead in the first half and we put ourselves under pressure after letting the goal in. To be fair to Wrexham they did well and the goal gave them an impetus to go forward."

Wanderers claimed victory thanks to first half goals from Leon Knight and Scott McGleish, a win which has moved the Blues on to 63 points only seven off Saturday's opponents Hereford.

The gaffer said: "We've put ourselves in a good position and we're right in it."

"The wind played a big factor and my thinking behind bringing Mike (Williamson) on was to give us a height advantage. I was just delighted with the way the way the players saw it through."

Wanderers played the final ten minutes with 10 men after Tommy Doherty was shown his marching orders for two bookable offences, a decision the Wanderers boss felt was slightly cruel.

He said: "The sending off may have been a little harsh. The first one 'Doc' had to make the foul but the second one was a little trip. If you're going by the letter of the law it is a sending off."

The Blues manager also praised right back Russell Martin after another commanding display. He said: "Russ has been terrific for me. People forget he's only a kid, but since I came to the club he's been great."
