Wanderers have boosted their promotion push following the opening of the January transfer window by signing ex-Chelsea hot shot Leon Knight. The lightning fast striker joins the Blues from League Two leaders MK Dons after successfully passing a medical today.
The news comes in the same week that Tommy Doherty's move from Q.P.R. became permanent and goalkeeper Frankie Fielding was expected to extend his loan deal from Blackburn Rovers till the end of the season. Said managing director Steve Hayes: '"We've brought in three real quality players this week and it proves that we mean business. Hopefully the fans will be as excited about the new arrivals as we are."
Knight, 25, is a proven goalscorer who began his career at Chelsea, making one appearance for the first team before enjoying successful loan spells at QPR, Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday. He then moved to Brighton for a substantial fee, netting the winner for the Seagulls in the League One Play Off Final in 2004 to cap an extraordinary season in which he notched 27 goals.
More goals followed for Knight the following season in the Coca Cola Championship before a £125,000 move to Swansea City in 2005 produced another fruitful spell for the diminutive striker including hat-tricks against Chesterfield and MK Dons.
Leon scored twice in the League Two Play-Off Semi-Final against Brentford, enabling him to appear in another final in which the Swans were edged out on penalties against Barnsley at the Millennium Stadium. A short loan spell at Barnsley followed before Knight joined MK Dons in January 2007.
He joins the Chairboys from MK Dons where he gained a reputation for his lethal finishing ability. The signing ends weeks of speculation over Wycombe's search for a striker with Paul Lambert declaring: "I've been looking for a striker with bags of pace to complement Scott McGleish and John Sutton and Leon certainly fits the bill.
"He's proved that he can score goals not only at this level but a couple of divisions higher as well. He's just what we needed and I'm delighted to get him."
It's hoped that Knight, who has signed an 18-month contract, will be available to travel with the Blues squad to face Mansfield Town at Field Mill on Tuesday night.
