ALL SQUARE AT YORK ROAD
By Matt Cecil and Ross Jeavons
Wanderers battled to a 2-2 draw with Maidenhead United on Tuesday night, with Jermaine Easter and Scott McGleish grabbing the goals.
The Blue Square South side twice came from behind to deny the Blues, with a brace from Dwayne Lee cancelling out a penalty by Jermaine Easter and Scott McGleish's smart finish in the first half.
Any fans expecting a tame, low-key stroll in the park would have pleasantly surprised to see Wycombe produce a high-tempo start to the game, with Jermaine Easter, David McCracken and Matt Bloomfield all coming close to opening the scoring.
The slightly sloping pitch worked in the Blues' favour as they produced a plethora of scoring opportunities in the opening stages, with the midfield four of Stefan Oakes, Sergio Torres, Matt Bloomfield and Martin Bullock providing the front-line with chance after chance.
However, the Magpies often looked dangerous on the break, and Scott Shearer was forced into making a smart save on 13 minutes after Darti Brown charged through the Blues' midfield and fired an effort on goal.
At the other end, Chico Ramos was keeping the Blues at bay with a string of fine saves but he was a mere spectator as Stefan Oakes' free-kick flew past him on 16 minutes, only to come crashing off the base of the post and away from danger.
Shearer was called into action again on 19 minutes with a good block from a Darti Brown shot, before the Wanderers charged down the other end of the pitch and brought about the first goal of the evening.
Martin Bullock's clever footwork was too good for left-back Ryan Johnson, who was forced into making a foul inside the penalty area, and referee Alison Chapman had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Jermaine Easter stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net and Blues fans could have been forgiven for expecting a reasonably comfortable victory.
But Maidenhead battled hard and continued to produce some impressive attacking movements, although their equalising goal on 22 minutes owed more to individual class than a good team build-up. Midfielder Dwayne Lee produced a fantastic swerving free-kick from 30 yards which flew into the top corner of Scott Shearer's net and brought about some jubilant scenes from players and fans alike.
Wycombe continued to press forward, with Easter and McGleish working well together to produce further chances. Easter latched onto his strike partner's flicked header before having a shot saved by Ramos on 28 minutes, and McGleish soon put the Blues back in front - once again courtesy of clever play from Martin Bullock.
The 32-year-old winger drifted out to the left wing and outfoxed the full-back with some close control before threading a neat ball into the area for McGleish to dispatch at the near post on 38 minutes.
However, Maidenhead equalised for a second times four minutes later when David McCracken was penalised for shirt-pulling in the box following a corner, and Dwayne Lee smashed home his second goal of the night to ensure the scores were level at half-time.
Fans hoping for an equally thrilling second half were to be left disappointed, as the inevitable influx of substitutes had a negative impact on the game. Sub Tom Williams created the first chance of the second period on 51 minutes, when his cross was cleverly controlled by McGleish before Jermaine Easter's shot was well blocked by Ramos.
The front two combined well on 57 minutes when Easter volleyed over from his partner's knock-back, and Sam Stockley had to be brave at the other end to throw himself in the way of Wes Daly's goalbound shot.
Paul Lambert made six substitutions on the hour mark - one of whom was John Sutton, who almost latched on to a short backpass on 75 minutes before Ramos hurried out to clear. Sergio Torres and trialist Andre Boucaud added flair to the midfield, combining well together on numerous occasions, and Lewis Christon came close to becoming an unlikely match-winner when his shot flew just over the crossbar on 85 minutes.
The Blues boss told wwfc.com after the game that Maidenhead's energetic, bustling display provided a good test for his side:
"You need a competitive edge in football sometimes. It was a very worthwhile exercise and it gave the players a chance to get in some more match time so I'm pleased."
