STYLISH LADIES PUT ON A SHOW
By Dale Hurman
By the time Wycombe Wanderers Ladies Captain Heather Scutchings curled home a delightful goal from the edge of the area the game had been comfortably won. The Women's F.A. Cup first qualifying round victory was however, even greater than the eight-nil score line might otherwise suggest.
The Mens sides are also known as the Chairboys but Sunday was all about the "Chairgirls." For the first time in almost four years the side had the pleasure of playing on the lush, wide-open turf of Adams Park, home of Wycombe Wanderers for seventeen years.
The Ladies team however pre-dates it. They were formed in 1989 and the first ever squad included Camille Kamara, cousin of Chris and Lucy Horseman, daughter of Wanderers' legend Tony.
Despite being affiliated with Wycombe Wanderers, and bearing the same name, the ladies are self-funded and therefore every penny is crucial. The ladies have had to get used to the battle, both on and off the pitch.
Naturally they were absolutely delighted to be playing at Adams Park, as they were to be wearing a brand new kit supplied by MD Steve Hayes. Both clubs are fully committed to working together to forge a partnership and help each other to achieve success.
Given the stylish kit and surroundings the ladies looked to turn on the footballing style but had no intention of under estimating opponents Tetbury Town, Gloucestershire League Division Two Champions.
Within four minutes the Chairgirls took the lead a corner from Sarah Davis resulted in a goalmouth scramble and Kirsty Manning found the net. On ten minutes the home side made it two, Sarah Davis shooting across visiting goalkeeper Amy Bryan and inside the far post. A third goal came just before half time and it was a beauty. Young midfielder Charlee Clarke curling a shot from 25 yards into the top left hand corner of the net.
Within a minute of the re-start Charlee Clarke capitalised on some hesitant defending to stab the ball home. Su Oakley made it 5-0 three minutes later, running onto a through ball to find the net with a simple finish.
Ten minutes into the second half the Tetbury goalkeeper Amy Bryan took a goal-kick and fell to the floor in agony and there was a delay of some ten minutes whilst she was treated. She was subsequently taken to hospital, suspected to have dislocated her knee.
Charlee Clarke completed a wonderful hat trick on 67 minutes with a fine shot from just outside the area that dropped just under the bar.
Colette Bardi then headed against the post from another dangerous Sarah Davis corner and from the resulting she provided number seven, Su Oakley heading home off the underside of the bar from within the six yard box.
Heather Scutchings goal in the sixth minute of injury-time sealed a stylish win and set-up a tasty local derby with Slough Ladies. You can be sure they'll be ready for the battle.
