Hi everyone and welcome to the first edition of the Jamie Young Show for the 08/09 season. It's been a while since I have last had anything to write because of the end of the season and the summer break but now on the eve of the forthcoming season I think it's fitting to get the ball rolling.
Firstly I don't want to touch on this subject for long but the end of last season saw us getting knocked out by Stockport County (as I'm sure you are all aware) and in the next week saw us lose our manager in Paul Lambert. Many of us were pretty shocked about the whole ordeal but need we be reminded that this is the world of football and anything that might happen in the office does not necessarily happen the same at a football club.
I guess football is the exception to the rule in this case. Like I said, many of us were shocked by the whole thing, me being included as one of them, and that's because I think change gives a feeling of uncertainty. Although he will be missed and many of the people in and around the club will wish he is still here, we have found in the form of Peter Taylor a highly credited manager.
Just like Lambert, he has worked at the highest level and I'm sure that this is an opportunity for all of us (including the fans) to really go again and do ourselves justice for the upcoming season. There are a few reasons why I think we have an even better chance of getting promotion and here's why:
Most of the team have been kept since last season and this adds to team cohesion and hopefully like a good wine we will get better as time goes on. With a few added faces in specific areas of the team, this could actually boost us.
Peter Taylor is an experienced manager who knows this and all the other leagues in England inside out. His experience is unrivalled in League Two and that will count for a lot. Therefore he will know what it will take to get out of League Two. I think this is a realistic goal for a club of our calibre otherwise we are not trying to get better and then this would be a problem.
The experience of last season I think will only spur us on to greater heights. In the last two seasons since I have been here we have improved and improved and I believe this is the time to go on another step.
But enough about football. Since the season has not started yet it means the team, including myself, have been on holidays. I myself went back to Australia to visit my family and old friends. It's great for me to go back there and totally forget about football, and sometimes that's a good thing. It allows me to recharge my batteries and forget about the day-to-day culture of being a footballer and actually enjoy life.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy it, but as everyone does it's just nice to get away from all of the pressures and hype of this game. As always I saw many old faces that I haven't seen for a long time and it's always great to catch up and take up where I left off the year before that. Also seeing my family was great. Most people don't know what it's like to see their family once a year but for me it was a great time and seeing them again couldn't have come at a better time after the disappointing end to last season.
I was lucky enough to go see Australia play against Iraq in a World Cup qualifier, and I even saw a State of Origin match between Queensland and New South Wales. How about an AFL match? It was great to see some sports that I grew up with when I was younger. But it was only for a brief period and now it's time to get back into the swing of things. That means to get back into football and playing for Wycombe Wanderers again.
So I say to the fans that it is time to go again and I'm sure this season will be a rollercoaster just like last season.
All the best,
Jamie Young
