THE JAMIE YOUNG SHOW
By Jamie Young
Hey everyone and welcome back to the Jamie Young show.
It's great to be back with another edition from yours truly after a little time out due to our heavy schedule. As always there are plenty of things to talk about, but before I get to that I think I'll start with some questions from the last couple of weeks.
Do you go along with the notion that, all goalkeepers are crazy?
Luke, High Wycombe
Of course! Being a goalkeeper is something that is totally unique within football. You are a vast minority and with that comes a lot of responsibility, not to mention blame. That's why I think goalkeepers have to be extremely single minded people. They have to be cool when everyone else is wavering. They can often set the feeling in teams in how they play, but most importantly of all most sides who have success have a goalkeeper of importance. It sounds like a hell of a lot of things to have and that is why I think you have to be crazy. I don't think I am, but I think if you ask the lads they would say I'm a bit of a psycho!
Great blog Jamie, keep up the good work! How much did you know about Wycombe Wanderers before you signed for them? Be honest!
Nick, High Wycombe
Haha surprisingly I was well aware of Wycombe Wanderers, because they are only up the road from Reading - which was my previous club. I didn't really know anything about the set up here, but I have to say it's been great from the day I arrived. I talk a lot about the players and the things we do as a team, but there are always people who are behind the scenes that I really have come to get along with greatly. People like Jim and Denzel who are in charge of our kit for instance. For me they are two top guys and it's so refreshing to come into training everyday and say hello to them. They are always on top of their jobs as professionals and are utter gentlemen off it, that is a rare commodity in this game.
Hi Jamie! What is the worst mistake you've ever made during a game?
Sarah, High Wycombe
What kind of questions are these...I don't make mistakes! (haha I wish). Unfortunately as a goalie it only takes one mistake for it to be a goal conceded and this usually makes it worse. For me though the worst one I did is when I was on loan to Rushden, where I rolled the ball out to kick it off the floor when unknown to me, the opposition striker was hiding behind me. He snuck around me, took the ball off my foot and tapped it into the net. Yeah it sucked and it makes you wonder why you bother. Who knows!
Well thanks for the questions now lets get started on some new topics...
Well since my last column there have been quite a few first team games, some of which have been against the better teams in our division. It's seen us get back to back victories but unfortunately we also saw a late own goal end that run of wins. Personally I think we are in good form though. As a defensive unit we are hard to break down and in attack we have goals thanks to Scott McGleish and now Leon Knight, who is showing the type of form that he is well capable of.
On a more negative note though we have sustained a few injuries over this period, namely Sergio Torres and Matt Bloomfield. 'Bloomsie' has ruptured his cruciate ligament in his knee. I would like to wish him all the best in this as I know what it's like to go through a serious injury. He's extremely well liked within the camp and I'm sure we'll all help out in getting him back to fitness.
In Sergio's case he has started training again and should be back soon enough. I'm sure you all know Sergio has signed a new deal which I think is not just major coup for us, but also a great achievement for a man who deserves everything he gets in this game. He has had to overcome so much just to be in the country and as someone who has also had to leave my home country, I understand what it is like to leave everything you know in search of your dreams, so well done 'Sergie'!
Our last game also saw the arrival of another Aussie in the name of Chris Herd, who is on loan from Aston Villa. This brought a smile to my face as it's not very often you can talk to a fellow countryman as a foreigner...This is sure help me out in the dressing room with the lads, as I am often ganged up on by the hateful English! Well that might be a bit strong, but we do call you all 'whinging poms' for a reason! Chris though was thrown in at the deep end by making his first appearance in our loss against Hereford, but the signs seem promising and I'm sure it's only a glimpse of what's to come from him.
A few weeks ago we had the Wycombe Golf Day which was held at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club. I volunteered to play, as did Neil Lennon and Sam Stockley. 'Stocks' was trying to psyche me out in the days leading up to the event, telling me how I 'better bring my A game' and such things. I told him I was sure it would be alright on the night and even challenged him to put his money where his mouth was.
Anyway after much arguing over handicaps and such things he ended up backing out of a bet all together, so I say to Stocks…….. pathetic! The next day the lads got wind of this (from yours truly ) and were quick to remind him of it. I thought it was hilarious but I don't think Sam felt the same... None the less it was all tongue in cheek and was a great day at a wonderful course.
Well we've come to the end of another week but before I go, I'd like to thank the fans for their support over the last couple of games. It has been great and I hope it continues to help create a buzz in our stadium. Once again keep sending in your questions , they are fantastic! Finally, as always, keep it real!
