Gupps was one of the most exciting wingers at the Blues since the days of Len Worley and played a huge part in the club's rise to the Football League.

Following his release from Southampton in 1989, it was Martin O'Neill who took hold of Steve and developed a talent he saw lurking beneath this nervous young man.

Perhaps the most successful player in the club's history, he holds the unique record of being the first Wanderers player to score a goal in the Football League at Carlisle.

Before the start of the 1994-95 season he leapt to the Premiership with Newcastle for £150,000 and then moved very quickly to Port Vale for £225,000 after seeing his chances limited at St James Park.

His career took off when he rejoined O' Neill at Leicester City and more success followed before the charismatic Irishman once more to Celtic.

In a career that went full circle, Gupps re-signed for the Blues on a 'pay as you play' deal in November 2004 but left shortly after the New Year to ply his trade in the United States.
