Jason Cousins lifts the Conference trophy in 1993. |
Jason Cousins was a committed defender with a never-say-die attitude that immediately endeared him to the Wycombe faithful.
Martin O'Neill signed Jason from Brentford in August 1991 on a free transfer after watching him deal somewhat unceremoniously with Keith Scott in a reserve team game.
Cousins became a permanent fixture at right-back, suspensions not withstanding, missing just 11 league games in four seasons under the Irishman. In the 1994/95 season he won the Player of the Season award.
He continued to make regular appearances under Alan Smith and John Gregory before being converted to a centre-half by Neil Smillie and won Player of the Season again in the 1998/99 season. He continued to excel in that role under Lawrie Sanchez, featuring in the FA Cup run and famously shackling Michael Owen at Villa Park. Jason left Adams Park in April 2002.
Despite playing in defence he scored some crucial and memorable goals including the opening goal against Runcorn at Wembley in 1993 (and THAT celebration), the fourth against Coventry City in the League Cup and against Bristol Rovers in 1999, injuring himself in the process but starting the Blues amazing escape from relegation.
After leaving he joined Aldershot Town and helped the Hampshire side win the Isthmian League title. Cousins then moved to Windsor and Eton in the summer of 2003 before retiring from football in the summer of 2004.
He was awarded a testimonial, which was played in October 2002 against Celtic.
