TOP TRIO

Tommy Doherty, Scott Shearer and skipper David McCracken have been selected in the PFA's League Two Team of the Season.

The three Wanderers players represent the biggest contribution from a single club in the division. And you can rest assured that the likes of Craig Woodman, Gary Holt and, dare I say, even John Akinde would have been tantalisingly close to making the hallowed eleven.

The club record of 21 clean sheets achieved in this campaign no doubt influenced the inclusion of our commanding Glaswegian goalkeeper, Scott Shearer. Despite being in the treatment room for a long spell, 'Shears' kept an impressive 14 clean sheets and looked as solid as any 'keeper in the Football League.

He told 'The Quarters': 'To be voted in the team by everyone else in the league is massive. It's probably one of the biggest achievements in my career so far'.

Shearer - and his rival and friend Jamie Young - have both had torrid times with injuries over the last two years. However, after successful surgery earlier this month, Scott is preparing for a summer break followed by pre-season training. 'The past two years haven't been great for me in terms of injuries' he said 'but I have been a part of this season and whenever I am not involved I am desperate for the lads to do well'.

With such an illustrious defensive contingent at his disposal, Peter Taylor was quick to acknowledge the quality of the current squad and that obviously includes Mr. Shearer. The 'gaffer' said: 'Any team that gets 21 clean sheets in a season must be doing something right and that starts with Scott Shearer.'

Dave McCracken has been a rock in the heart of our defence in this campaign and all aspects of his play have been exceptional. McCracken has been club captain for two years under two different managers and current boss Taylor knows he has the right man for the job. He said: 'I didn't know too much about 'Cracks' before I came here, but he is an excellent professional, footballer and captain who makes my job easy'.

Testament to McCracken's professionalism, the defender was quick to divert attention away from himself and back onto the team. 'It's a great achievement when your fellow professionals are voting for you' he said 'but it just shows how well the boys are doing at the moment and to have three players in the team is fantastic for the club'.

It's interesting to note that League Two Champions Brentford did not have a single player in the Team of the Season. It appears that the chairboys stars made a bigger impression on their opponents.

Moving into midfield, we reach our talisman Tommy Doherty. 'The Doc' finds himself in the League Two Team of the Year after yet another impressive term.

Doherty has represented Northern Ireland at international level - against England amongst others - and he played consistently well in the Championship with Q.P.R. His pedigree is there for all to see. Doc's inclusion in the PFA team only strengthens what Wycombe fans already know - he's simply the best.

Tommy Doherty is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the lower divisions

'Tommy Doherty is the best midfielder in our division and could probably be the best midfielder in the next division' said his manager. 'When he is in the team he makes us play and he's always available for the ball. He's very talented.'

All three PFA choices can be extremely proud of their achievements in a division that has been very competitive from start to finish. 'To get three players chosen just shows what a good season we've had' explained Taylor. 'I'm sure a few more of our players missed out by just a few votes, but everyone can be very proud of the season. '
