GATEWAY WIN AT WEMBLEY

Posted on: Fri 04 Jun 2010

Wanderers picked up their second Wembley trophy in a week when a team of local schoolboys won a national competition organised by the Football League.

Just seven days after the Blues received the League One Fair Play Award before the FA Cup Final, nine boys from Gateway School appeared at Wembley on behalf of the club, winning the F.L. Community Cup.

The Great Missenden School beat South Failsworth Primary School, representing Oldham Athletic, 1-0 in the final before last Saturday's League One play-off final between Millwall and Swindon.

Rajdeep Jutla's second half strike guided the boys from Buckinghamshire to glory under the famous arch as they hit their northern counterparts on the break.

Gateway defended heroically against a Failsworth side that included youngsters who are on the books of Manchester United and Liverpool, with keeper Brandon Allen and defender Sam Kemp putting in sterling performances to keep their opponents at bay.

All this came after the boys had been treated to a night in a plush hotel and a behind- the-scenes tour of the home of English football, courtesy of the Football League.

Community Trust assistant manager Alan Dunham said: "It's a fantastic achievement for the boys, not only to reach Wembley but to win the trophy.

"The triumph was even sweeter because a couple of weeks ago they were denied a chance to play at Wembley after going out on penalties in the National Schools Competition.

"It was a memorable day for me, but even more so for the children and their P.E.teachers Howard Judge and Robert Grosse."
