For those who aren’t aware, Walking Football - as the name suggests - is a slow-paced version of the beautiful game which is often aimed specifically at the over 50’s age group (but here at WWSET can be played by anybody)!
The walking format is a great way for those who are no longer willing or able to play the game they love at full speed still stay active and keep fit. It’s generally accepted that as you get older the opportunity to participate in team sports lessen – ironically at the age when you most need to keep active, both physically and socially.
Walking Football is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle despite their age or physical condition, as well as getting those back playing football who have previously had to stop for whatever reason. Despite the fact that no running is allowed, the walking football is surprisingly tiring, and you certainly work up a sweat; simply playing one hour a week for three months enables players to cover 30 miles and burn 4,200 calories!
In addition to the physical benefits gained from getting involved there are huge social benefits as well. The sessions run by WWSET on a weekly basis are extremely relaxed and the guys who already attend are a very friendly bunch, who love nothing more than a laugh and a joke.
Here’s what a few of them had to say about the sessions…
“…This is now the first thing in my diary each week. I have always struggled with regular exercise like gym sessions as I get bored so easily. Walking football is a great way of getting exercise and enjoying my favourite sport at the same time!”
“…I’m an asthmatic and the walking football sessions hugely improve my fitness.”
“…I just love playing, the banter is brilliant and we have all become such friends. Since beginning two years ago there has not been one serious argument…though the banter arguments are terrific! Everybody gets included in the game whatever their level and there are no cliques. Its competitive without being silly about it and nobody gets upset if you make a mistake; in fact that is where most of the banter comes from but we always all shake hands at the end of a game.”
This tournament is the local stage of the EFL Trust competition which seeks to find a team of national walking football winners.
The format involves each English Football League club running a local tournament to find a team who will represent their club in the regional stage of the tournament. The winners of the regional stage from the South of England will then go on to compete against the regional winners from the North of England in the grand final, which last year was played at the prestigious St George's Park.
Please note that every player who participates in the tournament, which is scheduled to take place on 14th March, will be given a complimentary ticket to the Wycombe Wanderers vs Plymouth Argyle fixture which takes place on the same day, so even if your team doesn’t win you can still have a nice football-filled evening!
