Wycombe suffered their second league defeat of the season as the Chairboys dropped to second place in League 2.

Wanderers made the perfect start to the game when Luke O'Nien got his head on the end of a Danny Rowe lofted pass into the penalty area, and the ball subsequently looped header over Northampton goalkeeper Adam Smith.

However, Northampton were eager to get back into the game and Matt Ingram soon denied shots from Nicky Adams and skipper Marc Richards within the space of a few minutes.

More chances came and went for both sides midway through the first half as Ingram made a good save, stopping Sam Hoskins' close range shot. Garry Thompson was also denied at the other end by Smith, after latching onto the end of a great through ball by Aaron-Amadi Holloway. Amadi-Holloway also had a shot of his own a couple of minutes later, but Smith got a hand to it and diverted it behind at the near post.

Northampton did however find an equaliser before half-time and it was Richards who scored it from a direct free-kick from just outside the box. Adams set it to him and Richards fired it into the top left corner, leaving Blues keeper Ingram with no chance of stopping it.

Into the second half and it took no more than two minutes for Northampton to take the lead. Once again Adams was the provider with a cross from the left which was met by Lawson D'Ath who flicked his header towards the far post. Just four minutes later and two became three from yet another cross from the left. A Joel Byrom free-kick taken quickly caught the Wycombe defence off-guard and it allowed Shaun Brisley a free-header which rebounded in off the inside of the post.

Despite the two-goal setback, Ainsworth's men were back in with a shout eight minutes from time when a Max Kretzschmar corner wasn't cleared properly. Smith failed to punch clear the ball which kindly fell to Danny Rowe after Aaron Pierre's knock down and Rowe smashed it past the Northampton players on the line and into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, the hosts couldn't find the late equaliser they were looking for and left a great entertaining game empty handed with Northampton taking all three points.
