Goals in either half from Matt McClure and Anthony Stewart secured the Blues’ passage into round two following a convincing 2-0 victory at Exeter City.

Wanderers were the better side in the first half and got the goal they deserved in the 28th minute when the impressive Billy Knott robbed Tommy Doherty inside the home side’s half and found McClure, who made no mistake and clinically fired into the far corner.

Chairboys were never really threatened and wrapped up the win eight minutes from time when Stewart powered home a header from Sam Wood’s cross.

Gareth Ainsworth handed Max Kretzschmar his full professional debut after the 19-year-old’s impressive performance in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Southend United.

Blues' boss made four other changes with Anthony Stewart, Stuart Lewis, Jo Kuffour and Matt McClure also involved from the start. Leon Johnson, Gary Doherty, Josh Scowen, Dean Morgan and Steven Craig were the men to miss out with the latter two on the bench.

Former Wanderers Craig Woodman, Tommy Doherty and Sam Parkin all started for the Grecians.

Nick Arnold tried his luck in the opening 60 seconds, but his left-footed strike flew wide of Artur Krysiak’s post. Available-again Lewis then fired wide from 20 yards as the Blues settled the better of the sides.

Chairboys were creating the early shooting opportunities and Billy Knott was off target in the 10th minute following a quick break from Kuffour.

The latter was inches away from reaching McClure’s clever flick five minutes later, but Krysiak was quick off his line to reach the ball first and alleviate the danger.

Wanderers were getting closer and Krysiak did well to beat away McClure’s strike from the edge of the area after the striker had cleverly made space for himself.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Knott dispossessed Doherty in midfield and broke forward before finding McClure. Last season’s joint top scorer steadied himself before calmly slotting the ball past Krysiak and into the far corner from 10 yards.

Ingram had to be alert and raced off his line to reach Parkin’s flick before Alan Gow, as the hosts looked for an immediate reply.

However, it was close to being two moments later when Knott again released McClure, who took the ball past Krysiak before being crowded out.

Ingram, who had been little more than a spectator for most of the half, kept the scores level six minutes before the break when he produced a stunning stop to tip Gow’s 25-yard strike over.

Blues’ No.1 then parried away David Wheeler’s firm header from the resulting corner as the Grecians began to pose more of a threat.

The hosts saw plenty of the ball early in the second half, but did little with it, and it was the Wanderers who threatened next when Knott’s shot deflected after a driving run from Lewis.

Parkin then headed well over from 10 yards as Exeter were still being restricted to half chances.

Ainsworth made his first change 17 minutes from time when Craig replaced Arnold, a move that saw Kuffour move out to the right.

Sercombe’s low 20-yard free-kick called Ingram into action, but he comfortably parried away from danger.

Matt Bloomfield was introduced nine minutes from time, and a minute later Chairboys added a second.

Wood’s dangerous corner was cleared back to the former Brentford man and he sent another superb delivery into the area, which was met powerfully by Stewart. The centre-back’s thumping header flew high past Krysiak from eight yards, giving the keeper no chance.

Jay curled low past Ingram’s left-hand post, however, it was the visitors who came closest to adding another when Bloomfield tackled Matt Grimes and burst forward before sending in a low cross which was just in front of Craig

Tommy Fletcher came on for his professional debut in injury-time and the Wanderers saw out time without being threatened.
