Wycombe and Aldershot shared the points as the defences came out on top at the EBB Stadium.

Following all the pre-match hype, the game never really lived up to the billing with neither side able to find a breakthrough.

The Blues bossed the first half and went close through Ben Strevens and Alan Bennett, while Danny Hylton hit the crossbar for the hosts late on as the Shots finished the stronger of the two teams.

On his return to his former club, Gary Waddock made three changes from Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Macclesfield with Alan Bennett, Lewis Montrose and captain Gareth Ainsworth coming into the starting line-up at the expense of Leon Johnson, Keiran Murtagh and Scott Rendell.

Former Shots stopper Nikki Bull thwarted Ben Harding early on as the hosts looked to capitalise on a bright beginning. But after breaking from midfield, Harding shot straight at Bull from 12 yards out.

That seemed to liven the Blues up and they soon began to dominate, creating numerous openings in the process. Firstly, Ben Strevens hit the side netting from close range after meeting an Andy Sandell cross before Shots centre-back Anthony Charles headed just over his own crossbar on 12 minutes.

With central midfield trio Montrose, Matt Bloomfield and Scott Davies bossing proceedings, it allowed widemen Ainsworth and Kevin Betsy to get forward, the latter nearly putting the Blues ahead after Danny Foster's teasing cross had caused mayhem in the Aldershot box.

The impressive Dave Winfield then forced Jamie Young into a save from a Matt Bloomfield corner before his centre-back partner Alan Bennett guided an effort inches wide of the left-hand post.

Shots winger Danny Hylton flashed a shot wide of Nikki Bull's goal as the first half drew to a close.

And the second period began with the same general tempo as the opening 45 minutes, with Wycombe enjoying more of the possession but struggling to break down an organised yet uninspiring Shots side. It looked as though a set piece would be the most likely way to break the deadlock and Matt Bloomfield almost did so in unorthodox fashion, deceiving Jamie Young with a shot from 45 yards which flew just over the bar.

At the other end, another free-kick - this time from John Halls - almost opened the scoring as the midfielder's exquisite curling effort went just wide of Nikki Bull's post on the hour-mark.

The ex-Reading man was beginning to impose himself on the game and it seemed to galvanise his side as they enjoyed a spell of pressure, coming close when Halls bent an effort just wide from inside the box.

Moments later, the ball was presented onto a plate for Anthony Straker when Marvin Morgan dispossessed Alan Bennett on the byline, but somehow the winger lifted his shot over the bar from within the six-yard box as the Blues received a massive let-off with 20 minutes to go.

There were a few occurrences of respite for the Blues when they broke forward but the momentum was with the Shots, and the visitors survived a goalmouth scramble with seven minutes left on the clock with Marvin Morgan, Damien Spencer and Danny Hylton all denied by a sea of blue shirts.

And after a fairly tame 90 minutes, there was some drama in stoppage time when firstly Andy Sandell's looping header bounced just wide with Jamie Young stranded, before a full-stretch save from Nikki Bull kept out Jermaine McGlashan's miscued cross.
