A goal from debutant Kevin Ellison sent Wycombe to a 1-0 defeat at Bradford City in an uninspiring affair at the Coral Windows Stadium.
The home side rarely threatened but stifled the Wanderers' attack throughout, although Chris Westwood saw a first-half header cleared off the line before sending a similar effort narrowly wide.
Bradford stole the points on 70 minutes when Ellison turned home from close range after a cross from the left found the winger in space six yards out.
Substitute Matt McClure spurned two opportunities to rescue a point late on and the Blues will now need to pick themselves up for the trip to Southend United on Tuesday night.
Gary Waddock made three changes for the clash in Yorkshire with Dave Winfield, Anthony Straker and Matt Bloomfield coming into the starting line-up at the expense of Leon Johnson, Danny Foster (ill) and Scott Donnelly.
Roared on by over 10,000 fans, Bradford started brightly and twice went close early on through strikers James Hanson and Scott Dobie. First, Hanson was denied from close range by Nikki Bull before Dobie directed a header just over Wycombe's crossbar.
Wanderers fought their way back into the game and although their first effort didn't come until the 16th minute, it nearly brought about the opening goal. Chris Westwood's downward header from Matt Bloomfield's inswinging corner was cleared off the line before Gareth Ainsworth's rebound was pushed away to safety by Lenny Pidgeley.
Wycombe soon found their rhythm and began to control proceedings as the game approached the half hour mark, and they were unlucky not to take the lead when Westwood glanced Ainsworth's pinpoint cross just inches past Pidgeley's right-hand post.
But strugglers Bradford fired a warning shot just moments later when Evans let fly from the edge of Wycombe's 18-yard box only to see his shot superbly blocked by the impressive Westwood.
Gary Waddock's men had a good case for a penalty five minutes before the break when Ben Strevens seemed to be hauled down by former Chairboy Lewis Hunt, but referee Eltringham waved away Wycombe's protests.
And Pidgeley had to be alert to push away Stuart Lewis' 20-yard drive as the Blues finished the first half on the offensive.
There were changes for both sides at the break with Alan Bennett replacing the injured Chris Westwood for Wycombe while Tom Adeyemi came on for Jon Worthington in the home side's midfield.
Adeyemi sent the first chance of the half wide of Nikki Bull's left-hand post from distance after Ben Strevens had been denied a penalty appeal at the other end, with the tempo beginning to increase following a fairly drab opening 45 minutes.
However, chances were few and far between and the game seemed destined for a stalemate until Kevin Ellison celebrated his debut by putting the Bantams in front on 70 minutes, turning home from close range after Wycombe failed to deal with a routine cross from the left.
Substitute Matt McClure had an excellent chance to level matters just moments after coming on when he sent his free header over the bar from a Kevin Betsy cross, and the same player then shot over after displaying some neat footwork to deceive Luke Oliver.
