Wycombe claimed an important victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Bury as Scott Rendell's second half strike earned all three points at Adams Park.
In an entertaining battle between two of the division's top sides, Rendell saw two first half chances go begging as both defences came out on top.
But the Blues slipped into a higher gear after the interval and claimed the winner when Matt Bloomfield charged down a clearance and squared the ball for the in-form striker to lash home into the corner.
A barrage of pressure from the visitors failed to materialise and Wanderers defenders Dave Winfield and Leon Johnson in particular held firm to close the gap between the two sides to three points.
It was both sides' first fixture in two weeks courtesy of the postponed matches last weekend but there were no signs of rustiness in the early stages, with half chances being presented at both ends.
For the Wanderers, Gareth Ainsworth sent a speculative effort wide from distance and then supplied a chance for Scott Rendell to head just wide with an inch-perfect cross.
Sandwiched in between, in-form Manchester United loanee Nicky Ajose flicked goalwards from close range, forcing a comfortable save from Nikki Bull.
And aside from the skilful football on show from both sets of players, there was added spice in the form of some heated confrontations following some strong challenges, most notably from Bury defender Efe Sodje.
The visitors almost took the lead when Steven Schumacher's diving header flew wide of the near post, whilst Rendell spurned a chance at the other end when his left-footed effort sailed over the bar.
With three minutes left on the clock before half-time, Stuart Beavon sent a glancing header towards the bottom corner which needed to be turned behind by Owain Fon Williams, and Chris Westwood sliced his effort wide from the resulting corner.
Bury forced the first chance of the second half when Andy Haworth fizzed a low shot wide of the far post, before Matt Bloomfield stung the palms of Fon Williams with a long range daisy cutter five minutes later.
Gareth Ainsworth was the next to test the keeper, drilling low towards the near post from a tight angle, and the tempo of the game seemed to be continually rising as both sides went in search of the victory.
It was Wycombe's determination and pressure on the ball which was giving the edge and they had Matt Bloomfield's never-say-die attitude to thank for earning the opening goal. The midfielder charged down Joe Skarz's routine clearance and raced into the area unchallenged, laying it on a plate for the unmarked Scott Rendell to fire home into the corner with 21 minutes remaining.
Despite a brief flurry of attacking intent from the visitors straight after the goal, in which Dave Winfield was on hand to bravely block a fierce Nicky Ajose effort from distance, the Blues looked in control and continued to force mistakes from the Shakers' backline.
Bury's insistence to push forward left gaps at the back but goalscoring chances were not forthcoming for either side until stoppage time, when Gavin Gunning sent a long-distance drive wide of Nikki Bull's post.
